Foreigners from outside the European Union who have migrated to Finland for employment are to become eligible for residence-based social security benefits, provided that their employment in the country has lasted a minimum of four months. The revision is part of a bill presented by the Government on Thursday and is estimated to concern approximately 1,500 foreign citizens per year.

Presently, people from non-EU countries working Finland are covered by the national health insurance scheme but not by the social security scheme unless their residence in Finland is permanent. Their eligibility for social security benefits would cease upon the end of employment.
